Things to Do Near Ashford, WA: Mount Rainier and Beyond

Ashford is the west-side gateway for Mount Rainier visitors coming through the Nisqually Entrance. Some stops below sit inside the national park; others are in the surrounding forest. Distances and access vary, and mountain roads can close with snow, construction, or fire activity. Check the National Park Service road status and trail conditions on the day you travel.

Start inside Mount Rainier National Park

Paradise is the classic alpine stop for meadows, mountain views, and trail access when conditions allow. In summer, parking fills early; snow can linger well beyond spring. For an easier-paced visit, Longmire combines park history with short walks through the forest.

On the road between Longmire and Paradise, Christine Falls and Narada Falls are popular waterfall pullouts. Use marked parking and stay behind barriers. Reflection Lakes offer a quieter-looking mountain scene on calm days, but the road and shoreline conditions change by season.

Hikers can look into the Skyline Trail or Myrtle Falls from the Paradise area. Check current trail reports before choosing a route; a summer map is not a winter itinerary.

Explore beyond the park boundary

For a longer forest outing, High Rock Lookout sits on public forest land outside the national park. The route is steep and seasonal, and road access can be rough; confirm current Forest Service conditions and carry the right footwear and water.

Skate Creek Road is a scenic drive through the forest between the Ashford and Packwood area. It is a gravel forest road in places, so check its condition before setting out and allow extra time. For a slower day, bring a picnic, stop at a signed viewpoint, or spend time in town rather than trying to fit every stop into one park day.

Make Ashford your home base

If you want to be near the west entrance, compare the Rainier Spa Cabin in Ashford. Guests planning a Packwood stay can browse Elkai Studio and Elkai Lodge. Each town works best for a different route, so match your lodging to the side of the mountain you plan to explore.

Mount Rainier rewards a flexible plan. Pick one park area, build in time for weather and traffic, and verify access before leaving your cabin.
